NHS College Awarded Food Sovereignty Virtual Community Education Grant

New Town, N.D. – Nueta Hidatsa Sahnish College (NHSC) has been awarded a two-year $100,000 grant to implement a food sovereignty virtual education

program for the Fort Berthold community.

The grant is part of the American Indian College Fund’s Obdaya Opta Tate Kin Kah’boke (Winds Blowing Across the Prairie)“Tate Kin” project. NHSC will

develop a community education program in master gardening and holistic health.

“With the recent COVID-19 pandemic, there is a great need for healing and re-connecting,” said Lori Nelson, director of Agriculture and Land Grants. “It is

imperative that the people of Fort Berthold have improved access to nutritious and culturally based wellness resources. It’s not only a matter of addressing

physical health, but also emotional and spiritual health, by honoring traditional ways of living and being.”

The project will integrate cultural knowledge and respond to a community need for improved health and wellness. It will emphasize a return to traditional

and holistic ways of living and increased local and traditional food production.

The program is a joint effort of NHSC’s Agriculture, Environmental Science and Native American Studies Departments. The goal is to re-develop food

sovereignty for the MHA Nation. It will support re-establishment of local food systems by community members.

NHSC enhances the quality of life and builds a strong, positive identity for the Mandan, Hidatsa and Arikara Nations or Three Affiliated Tribes. NHSC

offers in-demand certificate programs and associate degrees as well as three bachelor’s degrees. The college offers high-quality cultural, academic and

vocational education. NHSC provides encouragement and support to facilitate successful college careers.
